Online Gardening Calendar

April

April is an industrious month for the gardeners everywhere, with the whole garden in need of some tender loving care after the gloom of winter. Gardeners will be stirred into action by the mild days and extended daylight, and can start the new gardening season with a hopeful optimism.
The new season is in full swing at North Wales Garden World where you will be assured a warm welcome.

Fruit

If you have small fruit trees bushes, and a late frost is forecast, cover them with fleece to protect the blossom.

Trees and Shrubs

Give hedges, such as box, a spring clipping. Prune back the taller stems of dogwoods to achieve the maximum colour next winter. Mulch newly planted trees and shrubs.

Vegetables

Beds for tomatoes, marrows, and cucumbers should be prepared. Help peas florish by giving them a generous feed. Protect potatoes from late frosts by drawing the soil up over the leaves.

Flowers

Stake and tie any plants that need it, and protect tender shrubs from cold weather with fleece. Deadhead winter primroses and pansies, along with daffodils and tulips, and leave steams and leaves to die down naturally.

Lawns

With the help of milder weather and April showers, lawns will now be growing well, so mow regularly with the blades set high. Re-edge if required, keeping edges well trimmed. Treat weeds such as daisies and dandelions, and remove moss.

Pots

This is an ideal time to plant arum lilies in terracotta pots. Place a layer of large stones at the bottom of the pot, followed by a layer of compost (around 5cm in depth) mixed with grit or gravel. Position the lily rhizome on the compost, fill the rest of the pot with the compost mix, water generously and leave somewhere warm.

Ponds

Divide and re-pot marginal plants, and thin out aquatic plants before they start to grow and take over the pond. Feed the fish more as their appetite increases. Remember they have been a long time without food so they may be a little weak and need building up. Check your pump, as this should be switched on to ensure enough oxygen for your fish. This is a good month to consider restocking your pond with some new fish.
